The High-resoluition Doppler Sonar System is two sets of sonars installed on the R/V Revelle. One set is a 50 kHz unit and the second set is 140 kHz, each consisting of 4 beams. The sonars measure ocean velocities and shears with very high precision.
Data collected using the HDSS 140 kHz component in the Kuroshi current (Rainville & Pinkel, 2004). Shading of the velocities indicates velocity shear.
The data collected by the sonars is usually available post-cruise in a binary format. We are developing an onboard data availability capability that should be available soon. We have developed MatLab routine to read the binary data and process it into usable scientific data.
As with all Doppler sonar data, work is required of the scientitst to produce high quality velocities. Data must be deglitched, and biases removed. The routines offered here are intended to make life easier, but do not of themselves offer a final product.
We hope to receive user input into these routines so that we can improve them.
