The Ocean Physics Group, as part of the Scripps Instistitution of Oceanography, is involved in the study of oceanic dynamics. Designing, developing, and implementing unique Doppler sonar systems and other instruments, OPG has been able to probe the surface and interior of the oceans, from the warm tropical Pacific to the freezing Arctic.

OPG is involved in the study of a multitude of oceanic phenomena:

  • •  Surface gravity waves
  • •  Internal waves
  • •  Oceanic mixing
  • •  Langmuir circulation
  • •  Air-sea interactions
  • •  Rip currents
(in addition to the engineering issues concerned with the development of its unique sonar systems).
